The Spanish Super Cup has become one of the most recognizable examples of Spanish soccer taking a domestic competition abroad, with the tournament spending the majority of recent years in Saudi Arabia. That arrangement will be interrupted in 2027, however, as Saudi Arabia is scheduled to host the AFC Asian Cup during the same period.
The scheduling conflict has forced the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to examine alternative destinations for the four-team competition. The 2027 edition is expected to be played in February instead of January, with several international locations now being considered as the federation looks for a venue capable of replacing Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia has hosted the Spanish Super Cup for seven consecutive years, with matches taking place in cities including Jeddah and Riyadh. The tournament has only departed from that broader overseas strategy once since 2018, when the 2021 edition was moved to Morocco because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The decision to look elsewhere also highlights how important the Super Cup has become commercially. Taking the competition abroad gives the Spanish Football Federation access to new audiences, major stadiums and international markets while allowing the biggest clubs in Spain to showcase their stars on a global stage.
The leading candidate emerges
While Istanbul was initially reported as a possible destination, Miami has now emerged as the leading candidate to host the 2027 Spanish Super Cup, according to Diario AS. Istanbul remains in contention, while Qatar is also being considered as the federation weighs its options.
AS reported that Miami currently sits at the top of the list, followed by Istanbul and Qatar, with the RFEF’s delegated commission expected to discuss the potential venues. A decision is expected after the federation evaluates the logistical and commercial advantages of each location.

The possibility of staging the tournament in Miami would represent another major step in Spanish soccer’s push into the United States. The city already has a strong connection with the global soccer market, and the presence of Real Madrid and Barcelona would give the event enormous international attention.
Miami had previously been considered as a potential destination for the Women’s Spanish Super Cup. That proposal ultimately failed to materialize after one of the participating clubs opposed the move, but the city has now returned to the conversation for the men’s competition.
Turkiye remains serious alternative
Istanbul has also emerged as a strong contender and was described as the frontrunner in an earlier report from Spanish journalist Alfredo Martínez. According to Martínez, the tournament could be staged in the Turkish city during the first week of February 2027.

Istanbul would provide an attractive setting for the competition because of its long history of hosting major European soccer events. The city has previously staged Champions League finals, UEFA Super Cup matches and other major fixtures, giving it the infrastructure and soccer culture required for a tournament involving four elite Spanish clubs.
Qatar is the other major option currently being discussed, although it appears to sit behind Miami and Istanbul in the race. The final decision will ultimately depend on the federation’s assessment of scheduling, stadium availability, commercial opportunities and the overall organization of the event.
Real Madrid and Barcelona could meet in another El Clasico
The location of next year’s tournament is only part of the story because the sporting lineup has already created the possibility of another huge showdown. Real Sociedad will face Real Madrid in one semifinal, while Barcelona will meet Atletico Madrid in the other.
That means an El Clasico could once again decide the Spanish Super Cup if Real Madrid and Barcelona overcome their respective semifinal opponents. Such a final would bring Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal into the same spotlight, potentially giving the two young superstars another stage on which to shape one of Spanish soccer’s biggest rivalries.
