Published on August 10, 2026, Concacaf, the AFC, and UEFA authored an “Open Letter to the Football Family.” In it, they questioned FIFA’s current leadership and highlighted how recent commercial plans presented by Gianni Infantino have damaged the sport.
According to the letter, a “fundamental breach of trust” has been created between FIFA and the regional governing bodies. This rift developed following Infantino’s proposal to sell commercial stakes in major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup.

Throughout the letter, the three governing bodies explain why they felt deceived by FIFA regarding these commercial schemes. According to the statement, FIFA presented the plan on a compressed timeline to limit scrutiny and prevent member associations from properly reviewing the terms.

The federations rejected Infantino’s plan. While the FIFA president proposed an internal review of the situation, Concacaf, the AFC, and UEFA rejected that offer, asserting that an independent third-party investigation is necessary.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, Concacaf President Victor Montagliani, and AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa all co-signed the letter. “There is silence where there should be accountability, distance where there should be openness,” the statement concludes.
While there is no direct call for Infantino’s immediate resignation, the statement significantly intensifies pressure and fuels rumors of a potential leadership change at FIFA.
Reports suggest that Montagliani is interested in running for the presidency if an election to replace Infantino materializes. The regional confederations are clearly dissatisfied with administrative decisions, ensuring that tension remains high at FIFA headquarters in Zurich.
